Sun trine Uranus

The Sun in Libra is trining Uranus in Gemini today. The contact came exact yesterday and is now separating by less than a degree, so it is still close.

Ptolemy builds the aspects from geometry. Draw a circle, cut it with a diameter, then divide the half-circle into halves and into thirds. The halves give the square. The thirds give the sextile and the trine, the trine being a third of the whole circle, four signs apart.

He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious, and he gives a reason: they join signs of the same kind. Squares and oppositions join signs of different natures, and he calls those discordant. Libra and Gemini are both air signs, so the Sun and Uranus meet today on shared ground rather than across a divide.

The Sun, in Ptolemy's account, is the body whose power is most plainly felt. He adds that the other planets draw their energy from where they stand in relation to the Sun and Moon. A harmonious contact from the Sun lights up the other planet's nature and makes it easier to reach.

Uranus was unknown to Ptolemy. It was found by telescope in 1781, so its meaning comes from later practice, and the lines differ.

- Modern psychological astrology reads Uranus as awakening and sudden release: freedom, individuation, and the break that comes when a structure can no longer hold what is inside it. Where Saturn builds and maintains, Uranus interrupts, usually removing what was already outgrown. - Astrocábala places Uranus at Hochmah, the sephirah of Wisdom, and reads it as understanding reached by intuition rather than by reasoning.

We follow the kabbalistic line first and hold the two together. Uranus disrupts, and what it disrupts toward is a wider order than the one being broken.

Put the parts together and the trine lets the Uranian break run with the grain instead of against it. Sepharial wrote that the line of least resistance is the line of greatest progress. He pointed to lightning, which reaches the ground by zigzag, and to rivers, which reach the sea by turns and backward reaches rather than a straight course. A Sun–Uranus trine carries that kind of path. Change under it tends to arrive as a sudden clear seeing rather than as rupture, and outgrown things tend to loosen rather than snap. Pluto in Aquarius completes a grand trine in air with both bodies today, so this current does not run alone.

Here is something to practise while the contact is close. Pick one arrangement or habit you already sense you have outgrown. Instead of planning a clean, forceful break, look for the smallest change the situation already permits: the zigzag rather than the straight line. Then take that one step. A trine does not supply the effort, but it tends to make the easier route visible. This one loosens gradually as the Sun moves on through Libra over the coming days.
