Moon enters Virgo

When the Moon enters Virgo, the part of us that feels and reacts before it thinks takes on the manner of an earth sign built for craft, analysis and service.

In astrology the Moon stands for feeling and the need to feel safe: the reflex reaction, the sense of being at home, the conditions under which a person is at ease with themselves. Old habits and practised skills that no longer need thought are its province. The old tradition gave it the soul's unreasoning side. It can operate unnoticed, yet sustained effort on oneself can bring any of it into view.

Virgo is earth and mutable, ruled by Mercury, which is also exalted there. The Moon rules the earth triplicity by night, so the element is not foreign to it. Virgo meets the practical world as something to adapt to and get right. Its reward is the private certainty of a job well made, not applause. A planet placed there becomes more exact and careful, and takes on the sign's urge to perfect, examine and sort.

Read together, the Moon in Virgo looks for security through order and usefulness. Feeling settles when something is put right, sorted, finished or of use to someone. This gives a readiness to help unasked, an honest view of oneself, a quick eye for the point that matters, and the craftsman's pleasure when a thing works as well as it is made.

The same pull can turn hard. Self-criticism can become merciless, small things irritate, criticism stings, and unnoticed effort hurts. When nothing around it feels dependable, attention shrinks to detail and the larger view is lost. Things are kept spotless, or tidiness is abandoned the moment it falls short. Pressed by others, this placement can give way and fit in. What it needs is acceptance, flaws included.

Feeling differs from emotion: feeling is a true reading of a situation that words may not catch, emotion the same faculty thrown off balance, which blurs what is seen. A sign that analyses is well placed to tell the two apart, provided the analysis is turned on the mood and not on the self.

In the kabbalistic reading the Moon sits at Yesod, the foundation; Astrocábala makes it the first home of feeling. Virgo receives the letter Yod and, in one kabbalistic teacher's reading, the faculty of action, with the confidence that sincere effort can always set a damaged inner life right: the urge to repair instead of discard, and a refusal to give up hope.
