Venus comes to a standstill in Scorpio today and turns retrograde, halting at eight degrees of the sign before moving backwards against the zodiac. Ptolemy describes Venus at her best as making the mind affectionate, compassionate, refined in taste and easily reconciled. Standing still in Scorpio, the sign Pluto co-rules, those qualities are held in territory concerned with what is buried and who holds power. Where affection has been running on ease, it tends to meet questions of depth and control instead. The quick reconciliation Venus is known for is harder to come by while she holds her station.
The station arrives inside a tight, hard figure. Mars in Leo opposes Pluto in Aquarius, and both square Mercury in Scorpio. That makes a T-square with Mercury at its apex, all three bodies in the early degrees of fixed signs. The Mars–Pluto opposition and the Mercury–Pluto square are exact today and still tightening. Mercury's square to Mars passed exact since yesterday. The figure is at full strength now.
Read as one configuration, it works like this. The opposition sets Mars, which is direct assertion, against Pluto, which is what assertion becomes when it goes deep, turns sustained and stops being personal. Pluto in Aquarius is a long generational season. Mars is the passing body that makes it briefly specific.
The quarrel between them lands on Mercury, the planet Ptolemy ties to the quality of the mind and to speech. At full strength this means conversations that turn into contests over who decides. Words carry more force than intended, and thinking circles one fixed point. With all three bodies in fixed signs, the tendency is to hold ground rather than give it.
The point opposite Mercury is not empty. Chiron, in the last degree of Aries, opposes Mercury from close by and closes the figure into a grand cross. That fourth arm is wider and separating: Chiron's contacts to Mercury and Mars have both loosened since yesterday. Chiron marks the sore spot that does not close by ordinary means, and its aspects show what keeps reopening it. An old sensitivity about being heard, or about asserting oneself, may be touched, though that pressure is easing. In a cross, every move in one direction is met by a demand from another. The workable approach is one axis at a time, expecting the others to pull.
New today, Mercury begins closing on Venus as she stands still. Ptolemy says that Venus joined with Mercury and well placed gives speech that is agreeable and sincere, along with a love of learning and the arts. Placed adversely, the same pairing turns sharp-tongued and faithless. With Mercury carrying the T-square, both sides are live. Whatever is said about affection over these days carries weight.
Mars also makes an exact trine to Neptune, still applying. It is the strongest flowing contact among the day's exact aspects. Neptune loosens boundaries, and that produces compassion and imagination as readily as evasion and self-deception. Here it gives Mars a soft outlet. Effort can go into generous or imaginative work. The same contact makes it easy to slide away from a confrontation the T-square is pressing for.
Mercury sits at an exact quincunx to Neptune. Ptolemy does not count that angle at all. Modern practice reads it as a need for repeated adjustment, and we follow the modern line while the tradition stays divided. Read that way, it describes a mind under pressure that keeps correcting for what is not clear.
Neptune's exact square to Black Moon Lilith adds friction of its own. Black Moon Lilith marks what refuses to be accommodated, a frustration that will not be dissolved away however much Neptune blurs the edges.
The Sun's opposition to Saturn continues and tightens. In Ptolemy's scheme both bodies are in their fall: the Sun in Libra as its heat diminishes with the shortening days, Saturn in Aries as its cold diminishes. Two weakened bodies face each other across the sky, and that reads as a standoff in which neither purpose nor limit is at full strength. The Sun's opposition to Neptune has ended.
This sits hardest for anyone with planets in the early degrees of the fixed signs, where the T-square falls. It also sits harder for those with placements in early-to-mid Libra and Aries, where the Sun and Saturn meet.
Astrocábala reads Pluto's pressure as regeneration. It asks whether one is recreating what no longer serves, and Red Milenaria quotes Rilke: perhaps everything terrible is, at its deepest, something helpless asking for our help. The dragon is still a dragon. The counsel both lines give under Pluto fits the day: do not let frustration accumulate, do not give way to emotional coercion, and do not let someone else's authority quietly replace your own judgment.
For practice, choose one conversation that matters and say your part plainly, once. Leave the other fronts for later.
