The Sun and Saturn stand exactly opposite each other today, the Sun in Libra and Saturn retrograde in Aries. Warmth meets cold across the sky, and neither side is at full strength. Both bodies are in their fall. Ptolemy places the Sun's fall in Libra because the days are shortening there and its heat is ebbing, and Saturn's fall in Aries because rising heat means receding cold. Each sits in the sign where the other is exalted. This tends to set goodwill and effort against restriction, delay and obligation, and because both are weakened, neither the push nor the brake is held steadily. The opposition perfected today and separates from here, so its pressure is sharpest now and slackens over the coming days.

Ptolemy, explaining why Saturn rules the signs opposite the Sun and Moon, gives as one reason that the opposition does not co-operate towards the production of good. Today that relation is not a matter of houses but of positions, with Saturn facing the Sun directly. In lived terms, things ask more effort than they should, offers come back with conditions attached, and a limit that would normally be firm and clear can feel arbitrary instead. Saturn has been in Aries for some time and will stay for a good while. What the Sun does today is bring that long condition into focus. Sepharial recorded that during 1909 and 1910, with Saturn in Aries, Consols and annuities stood at their lowest in fifteen years, and he read Saturn as the cause of depression and loss. That is his observation of his own time, not a statement about ours. This opposition sits harder for anyone with the Sun, Moon or a personal planet in the early-middle degrees of the cardinal signs.

Yesterday's exact opposition between Mars in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius continues and is now easing. Yesterday it was part of a grand cross, with Mercury and Chiron closing the square. That figure has dissolved. What remains is a T-square with Mercury in Scorpio as its apex, and that too is separating and loosening. Mercury is where the strain has its address. Thought and speech take the pressure of a quarrel between Mars's dry heat and Pluto's weight, and words can come out harder, or more loaded, than intended. The point opposite Mercury is not empty. Chiron at the last degree of Aries still opposes it, widely and separating, the fourth corner of yesterday's cross drifting away. Under Pluto the counsel stays the same: do not let frustration accumulate, do not give way to emotional pressure, and do not let someone else's authority stand in for your own judgment.

Mercury is also coming exactly into quincunx with Uranus, and this contact is tightening. The tradition is divided on this angle. Ptolemy held that signs five apart share no familiarity and did not count it as a configuration. Modern practice reads it as an aspect of adjustment, and we follow the modern line without calling the older one wrong. Uranus sits in Gemini, one of Mercury's own houses, while Mercury works from Scorpio, a house of Mars. Ideas tend to arrive sideways and refuse to fit the reasoning already under way, so plans get corrected, then corrected again. Uranus disrupts, but what it disrupts toward is a wider order than the one being broken.

Neptune in Aries is closing an exact square to Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn, and it is still tightening. Black Moon Lilith marks what refuses to be accommodated. Neptune loosens edges and, as Sepharial put it, produces an involved state of affairs. Together they make it harder to tell a principled refusal from an evasion, one's own or anyone else's. Where something will not bend around these days, it helps to check whether the ground under it is clear or clouded.

New today is a wide square between Venus, retrograde in Scorpio, and Mars in Leo. It is applying, and Mercury is drawing closer to Venus at the same time. Venus has a favourable, moist temperament. Here she is working backwards through a sign of Mars and squaring Mars himself. The tendency is for affection and ease to meet heat and impatience, and for what is said between people who care about each other to carry more edge than either means. Mars still has easier outlets. His trine to Neptune is easing from exact, and his sextile to Uranus is tightening, which gives effort somewhere freer to go than head-on.

Under all of this the Moon sits in Cancer, her own house, and that gives the day a steadier undertone of feeling.

Where a limit meets you today, try naming it plainly, once, rather than pushing against it or quietly giving way. Then decide what you will do inside it.
