Moon in Capricorn

The Moon is in Capricorn today. To read it, take the two parts separately first.

The Moon stands for feeling and instinctive response: how a person reacts before thinking, what makes them feel at home, and what they need to feel right about themselves. It carries the past into the present. Habits and learned skills that now run without attention belong to it, and none of this is beyond reach, because all of it can be brought into awareness. It is the fastest body in the sky and keeps a sign for only two or three days. Its sign colours moods across that short stretch and then gives way to the next.

Capricorn is earth and cardinal, ruled by Saturn. The Sun enters it at the winter solstice, the shortest day, after which the light slowly returns. The sign pulls towards achievement in the world as it is. It brings self-control, caution, reserve and ambition, and it wants a truth that can be tested and that works. Above all it wants to be effective. The thought of depending on others and not being in control frightens it.

Put the two together and you can see why the Moon is said to be in detriment here. The Moon needs nourishment, and at some point in life it needs to be allowed to depend on someone. Capricorn tends to hold feeling down for the sake of discipline. In this sign the Moon has to serve practical ends, and where it cannot, it works under strain.

That strain runs in both directions at full strength. On one side, feeling turns into steadiness. Care shows itself as doing the useful thing, comfort comes from order and a plan, and the person stays calm because they can see the next step. On the other side, the same placement can harden into over-seriousness. Needs get disowned and pleasures get excused as duty. If it is unsettled, a dread of failure can grow, and long hours brooding alone feed it. Capricorn's dry, self-mocking humour is one of the ways it keeps its balance.

In the kabbalistic reading the Moon sits at Yesod, the foundation, the cradle of the emotions. Capricorn carries the letter Ayin, the eye, and the faculty of anger. In kabbalistic reading it marks the passage from immaturity to maturity. The immature eye judges others harshly, while the mature eye looks for the good in them and turns its anger on its own faults.

What this placement favours, for anyone, is feeling given a form: building something you can point to, and finding security in work that holds up.
