Sun opposition Chiron

Sun opposition Chiron is the aspect formed when the Sun and Chiron stand 180 degrees apart, in opposite signs. To read it, take each body in turn, then the angle that joins them.

The Sun is the centre of the self: the will to be and to create, and the need to be recognised. At full strength it gives character, loyalty, truthfulness and courage. The same energy can harden into pride: the wish to be special, the urge to hold the centre whether or not it fits, the self made its own only centre until it stands alone. Its house shows the part of life where a person comes most alive.

Chiron was found in 1977. It takes about fifty years to circle the zodiac, unevenly, staying anywhere from a year and a half to eight years in a sign. Its house can show where a person first meets a sense of hurt, of being blocked, or of not working fully. It sometimes marks something a person does very well for others, but cannot do for themselves. The healing it asks is acceptance of what is as well as repair, and the ability to ease in others what one has carried. The old myth made Chiron a great physician who bore a wound his own skill could not heal. Astrocábala reads him through Apollo, who raised him and who stands for the Sun and Tiphereth, the heart of the kabbalistic Tree, so his work is pain transmuted through knowledge. In this aspect, then, the Sun faces a body whose healing is itself solar.

The opposition places two energies on either side of an axis, alike in some ways and opposed in others. Modern practice reads it as a pull between contrary tendencies, met most directly through other people. Projection makes it hard to tell what is one's own and what belongs to someone else. The old tradition counted the opposition among the discordant configurations. We read it, like every aspect, for what it asks as well as for what it produces.

Joined this way, the Sun's need to shine faces the place of hurt. In one direction the wound seems to live in others. Recognition feels withheld, someone appears to stand in the way of the self, or a person spends their strength healing everyone but themselves. Where egotism runs strong, the Sun's oppositions tend to bring conflict largely of one's own making. In the other direction the same pull becomes awareness. Once the hurt is seen as one's own, will and wound can meet, and the self gains an authority built partly from what it has suffered and can now relieve in others.

In transit the Sun works as a timer, charging whatever it reaches, and an opposition lasts about six days. In a birth chart the aspect describes a lasting tension between identity and injury that a person works with over a lifetime.
