Moon in Pisces
The Moon in Pisces places the planet of feeling and instinctive response in the last sign of the zodiac. Pisces is the mutable water sign that closes the cycle before a new one begins. The Moon crosses it in two or three days, as it crosses every sign. In a birth chart the placement is held for life.
The Moon describes how a person reacts before thinking, what makes them feel at home, and what they need in order to feel right about themselves. It carries the past into the present as habit and automatic response. None of this has to stay below notice: with deliberate attention, the reactions it governs can be brought into awareness.
Pisces is the sign of the self set aside. Its ego is less sharply drawn than in other signs, so it takes in more than it asserts. That openness gives compassion, a capacity to sense what others miss, and a pull towards caring for those who suffer. It also gives confusion, passivity, a habit of taking other people's moods as one's own, and a ready retreat into fantasy. Its ruler is Jupiter, and modern practice adds Neptune. We read Neptune as a second colour for the sign and keep Jupiter as the ruler when tracing which planet governs a placement.
The two share a nature. The Moon is moist above all, and Pisces belongs to the water signs, whose rulership the Moon shares by night. So the planet of receptivity works in a sign built for receiving, and each strengthens the other. Of all the planets, the Moon is the one most inclined in Pisces to turn dreamy and fanciful. That can feed real creative work and a kindness that needs no explanation. It can also draw a person away from practical matters, and the private world Pisces keeps can become hard for anyone else to enter.
One distinction does most of the work with this placement. Feeling is the Moon in balance: an accurate perception, often hard to put into words. Emotion is the same energy out of balance, and it clouds what is perceived. Here the perception can be unusually fine, and the line between sensing another person and absorbing them is thin. The Moon's sphere is described as the dwelling of images, and Pisces leans towards illusion. Telling a true impression from a borrowed or imagined one is the skill this placement asks for.
The kabbalistic reading places the Moon at Yesod, the foundation and the cradle of the emotions. It gives Pisces the letter Qof and the faculty of mirth. In its higher form that mirth is the laughter of watching light emerge from darkness, the heart's anxieties turned into joy. Its lower form is worry that keeps circling and will not settle. With the Moon here, the emotional foundation of a life is built from one or the other, and which one grows depends on the person.
