Moon enters Cancer
When the Moon enters Cancer, it comes into the sign it rules. It stays two to three days, and here planet and sign describe nearly the same thing.
The Moon is the planet of feeling and instinctive response: how a person reacts before thinking, what makes them feel at home, what they need in order to feel right about themselves. It carries the past into the present, in habits and skills that have become automatic. The old tradition gave it the part of the soul that works without reason, as Mercury holds the reasoning part. Its responses can run without attention, and deliberate work on oneself can bring any of them into awareness.
Cancer is cardinal water, the sign the Sun enters at the June solstice. Its theme is belonging: the past, childhood, family, the mother, the community, the place a person comes from. It registers relation through feeling, often too deeply for plain words, and it protects what it feels.
Classical astrology counts the Moon in Cancer as in its own house, its domicile, because the Moon is the sign's ruler. One modern reading finds the match very close: both stand for the mother, for being fed emotionally and for having roots. When they meet, the sign brings little that is foreign to the planet, so the Moon's feeling, reserve, moods and self-protection come through undiluted.
That runs at full strength in both directions. Where the need for security is met, the Moon in Cancer nurtures: it looks after others, hands on the care it was given and brings warmth to any group it belongs to. Where that need goes unmet, the same pull holds on too tightly for fear of loss, and things can come to stand in for the security that is missing.
Feeling is the Moon in balance: an accurate perception, even when it is hard to put into words. Emotion is the same faculty out of balance, and it clouds what it perceives. Cancer intensifies both.
In transit, the Moon's passage through Cancer colours moods for its few days, often noticed only afterwards.
In the kabbalistic line the Moon stands at Yesod, the foundation at the base of the central pillar. Astrocábala reads it there as the place where emotion is first held and protected, and where illusion lives among images. The kabbalistic tradition gives Cancer the letter Het and the faculty of sight. One reading takes the refined form of that sight as the ability to guard one's eyes and look through the outer shell of things to the life inside them. In the Moon's own sign, that sight is the counterweight to the images: feeling that sees as well as reacts.
